Frequently asked questions

What is VirusTotal?

VirusTotal is a free online service that analyzes URLs and domains using over 70 antivirus engines and URL/domain blacklisting services. It aggregates results from engines like Google Safe Browsing, Kaspersky, BitDefender, and many more to give you a comprehensive safety verdict.

How many engines are checked?

VirusTotal checks your URL or domain against 70+ security engines including antivirus vendors, URL scanners, and domain reputation services. The exact number varies as VirusTotal continuously adds and updates its engine partners.

What does the detection ratio mean?

The detection ratio shows how many security engines flagged the URL or domain as malicious or suspicious out of the total engines that analyzed it. For example, '3 / 70' means 3 out of 70 engines detected a threat. A ratio of '0 / 70' means no engines found any issues.

How often are results updated?

Results are cached for 1 hour to respect VirusTotal API rate limits. If a URL has never been scanned before, we submit it for analysis and you can recheck after about 30 seconds. VirusTotal itself updates its engine results continuously as vendors update their threat databases.
